UNESA students train residents to turn plastic waste into fuel oil
Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-Waste is still a problem in various big cities and even regions. To solve it, it takes attention and movement from various parties, not only the government, but also young people must take part.
That is what a group of students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Surabaya State University (UNESA) who are members of the Student Creativity Program for Community Service (PKM-PM) team showed.
They went to the field to provide training on the utilization of plastic waste into fuel oil or 'BBM' in Sudimoro Village, Jombang some time ago. Team leader Mohammad Faisol explained that the oil produced can be used as fuel for oil stoves.
“There is a technique for burning it so that it has no impact on the environment. The fuel produced can be traded or at least residents can utilize waste to produce their own fuel and do not need to spend money to buy fuel outside,” he said.
He added that the training they provided was based on the identification of the needs and problems in the village. The results of their survey show that the village has a problem with waste and has not been resolved, especially a lot of plastic waste which is difficult to decompose.
They had also approached the local village officials and revealed that the villagers were not yet able to process plastic waste. After coordination, the training was held. The goal was to educate the villagers on the importance of protecting the environment, providing trash cans and disposing of waste in the designated areas.

Also, to equip residents with the skills to process waste based on its type into useful and marketable products. Muhammad jakfar, S.Si., M.Si., supervising lecturer, said that the training conducted by his students was new. Usually, the training turns waste into craft products. This time, it was turned into fuel oil.
“In addition to the training, we also continue to conduct regular monitoring and form a monitoring team initiated by students in collaboration with the Sudimoro Village community. The goal is to assist residents in sustainable waste management,” he said.
Achmad Roni, Head of Sudimoro Village, expressed his gratitude for the activities carried out by the students in his village. According to him, the community needs movement and direct examples from young people and students on how to overcome waste problems.
“We think this activity is important for the community. This can be an important asset for us to continue in the future in the form of a village program,” said Achmad Roni.
The training was initiated by the UNESA PKM team consisting of Mohammad Faisol, Muhammad Ubaidillah Faqih, Regita Putri Adilia, Avi Shahada Rafli, and Andinie Chandra Maulida Pratiwi. This activity passed the PKM-PM program of the Directorate General of Learning and Student Affairs (Ditjen Belmawa). [*]
