UNESA runs educational outreach beyond its campus
Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) undertakes both programmed and ad hoc educational outreach beyond campus, delivering tailored lectures, training and demonstrations to teachers, pupils and residents in local schools and villages across East Java and beyond in 2025 and 2026. UNESA runs the annual Mathematics Care and Share (MATHECS) programme, held in a different village each year, the standing Fakultas Hukum Berdampak programme for the villages of Kecamatan Sukomoro, and a scheduled eight-month training programme for the teachers of SDIT Madani Sidoarjo, alongside a wide range of one-off training sessions and demonstrations delivered by its study programmes, faculties and student organisations.

Programmed (regular, scheduled) outreach beyond campus
Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) runs programmed outreach beyond campus through Mathematics Care and Share (MATHECS), an annual community-service programme run by the Mathematics student body, HMP Matematika of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), for one week each year in a village beyond campus. The 2025 edition ran from 10 to 17 August 2025 in Desa Rejosari, Kecamatan Jatirejo, Kabupaten Mojokerto, where students assisted the teachers of SDN Rejosari in class, taught Quran reading to children at the village TPQ, and ran a quiz competition for pupils and a branding and digital marketing workshop for new village entrepreneurs, led by a UNESA mathematics lecturer (HMP Matematika, 2025). The 2026 edition, described by the university as a yearly community-service programme (program pengabdian masyarakat tahunan), ran from 20 to 26 July 2026 in Desa Jatipandak, Kecamatan Sambeng, Kabupaten Lamongan, where students taught at MI Darussalam Jatipandak, ran tutoring and Quran reading sessions, and led educational and skills activities for village children and adults (S1 Matematika, 2026b).
The Faculty of Law launched Fakultas Hukum Berdampak (Faculty of Law Makes an Impact) as a standing outreach programme for all nine villages of Kecamatan Sukomoro, Kabupaten Magetan, on 7 July 2026, assigning 48 law students to continuing fieldwork under the programme. The launch was attended by the subdistrict head (Camat Sukomoro), the heads of the nine villages, Magetan Regency's legal and communications offices, and partner law firms and notaries. The faculty's dean, Arinto Nugroho, described it as a continuing collaboration to help village governments draft legal instruments, strengthen governance and raise residents' legal literacy (Fakultas Hukum, 2026a).
UNESA lecturers run a scheduled eight-month training programme for the teachers of SDIT Madani Sidoarjo, a primary school, from April to November 2026, with Universitas PGRI Delta. Funded under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology's 2026 community partnership scheme and led by UNESA's Lestariningsih, the programme trained the school's grade 1 to 6 teachers in May and June 2026 to turn local resources such as Sidoarjo's milkfish industry, markets and small businesses into numeracy material, and in August 2026 to build interactive Flipbook media and use generative AI; one product is a lesson on plane shapes built on the Sumur and Pari temples of Sidoarjo (Radar Jatim, 2026).
Ad-hoc outreach beyond campus
Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) delivers ad hoc outreach beyond campus through one-off, off-campus training for teachers run by its study programmes and faculties as part of Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (community service). The Biology Education programme trained teachers of Sekolah Insan Cendekia Mandiri boarding school, Sidoarjo, in Sustainable Development Goals based lesson design centred on Black Soldier Fly (maggot) cultivation, as the team's first such activity, on 13 August 2025 (Goodnewsfromindonesia.id, 2025). The Information Technology Education programme (PTI), Faculty of Engineering, trained teachers of SMAN 3 Batu, a secondary school, to build a school website and use it for entrepreneurship promotion, reported in November 2025 (Dinas Komunikasi dan Informatika Provinsi Jawa Timur, 2025). In 2026 the Doctoral programme in Educational Technology trained teachers of Yayasan Barunawati Biru Surabaya, from kindergarten to vocational-school level, on integrating artificial intelligence into teaching, at the foundation's own premises, on 9 May 2026 (S3 Teknologi Pendidikan, 2026). Ten lecturer teams of the Mathematics cluster, FMIPA, trained primary and lower-secondary teachers of Kabupaten Jombang on innovative mathematics teaching, working with the Jombang Education Office, on 25 July 2026 (S1 Matematika, 2026a). The Faculty of Language and Arts trained teachers of SDN Bakungan, Banyuwangi, at the school itself, to make TikTok based educational content, on 11 May 2026 (S1 Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia, 2026). The Primary Teacher Education programme (PGSD) trained primary-school teachers of Kabupaten Blitar, split into twelve groups, on deep learning, artificial intelligence and local wisdom, on 10 August 2026 (S1 Pendidikan Guru Sekolah Dasar, 2026). The Doctoral programme in Primary Education (S3 Pendidikan Dasar), with the teachers' working group KKG 01 of Kecamatan Kota Sumenep and the Sumenep Education Office, trained 20 primary-school teachers in Kota Sumenep to design mathematics lessons built on keris culture and ecological literacy, on 18 July 2026 (S3 Pendidikan Dasar, 2026).
UNESA staff and students also deliver hands-on demonstrations directly to pupils at partner schools. The Master's programme in Biology Education trained pupils of SMAN 18 Surabaya to make herbal yoghurt with kayu secang as a functional food demonstration, on 3 and 4 August 2026 (S2 Pendidikan Biologi, 2026). Students on teaching practicum placement (PLP) from the Special Education programme ran an anti-violence and anti-narcotics session for secondary pupils of SLB Harmoni, Sidoarjo, on 20 April 2026 (S1 Pendidikan Luar Biasa, 2026). The student association of the Applied Fashion Design programme ran a hand painting workshop for 30 pupils of SMA SLB Karya Mulya, on 13 August 2026 (D4 Tata Busana, 2026). The Faculty of Psychology delivered a parenting session to parents of pupils at SMP Negeri 4 Gresik, in September 2026 (Fakultas Psikologi, 2026). The Master's programme in Guidance and Counselling (S2 BK) delivered an online character building session to pupils of SMP 1 Langsa, Aceh, on 10 September 2026 (S2 Bimbingan Konseling, 2026). The Sociology programme, with partner SociopreneurID, ran an online social entrepreneurship workshop for pupils of SMA SAIM, Surabaya, on 28 July 2026 (S1 Sosiologi, 2026).
UNESA faculties also carry out one-off educational outreach directly in village communities. The Faculty of Law delivered legal literacy education on land administration, inheritance disputes and village cooperatives to residents of Desa Tremas, Kabupaten Pacitan, on 15 July 2026 (Fakultas Hukum, 2026b). Lecturers and students of the Communication Science programme ran a digital literacy and content creation mentoring session for young residents of Desa Tambak Cemandi, Kabupaten Sidoarjo, on 10 May 2026 (S1 Ilmu Komunikasi, 2026). The student executive body of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (BEM FMIPA), with the university's Directorate for Prevention and Handling of Strategic Issues (PPIS), ran an anti-bullying and anti-narcotics session for pupils of SDN 2 Pataan, Desa Pataan, Kecamatan Sambeng, Kabupaten Lamongan, on 2 July 2026 (Direktorat Pencegahan dan Penanggulangan Isu Strategis, 2026).
