UNESA evaluates students' sustainability literacy through its curriculum

Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) evaluates its students' sustainability literacy in every semester through its outcome-based curriculum: every course plan states the SDGs the course supports, the teaching team of each course evaluates students' attainment of the course learning outcomes each semester (Universitas Negeri Surabaya, 2025), and the SDGs Center verifies the SDG course plans in its SDGs DATA system (SDGs DATA UNESA, 2026). In 2026 study programmes updated their course plans and outcome-based curricula with an SDG perspective (S1 Pendidikan IPS, 2026) (S1 Seni Rupa Murni, 2026).

Systemic Evaluation of Student Sustainability Literacy

Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA), led by its SDGs Center in collaboration with the Directorate of Education and Learning Transformation (Direktorat Pendidikan dan Transformasi Pembelajaran, DPTP), evaluates student sustainability literacy in both academic semesters. The assessment is built into UNESA's core curriculum and its Outcome-Based Education (OBE) framework.

UNESA's curriculum guideline, issued as a Rector's Regulation in 2025, requires every course plan (Rencana Pembelajaran Semester, RPS) to state the SDGs supported in the learning process, next to the course learning outcomes (CPMK) that students must reach. Each semester or year, the teaching team of every course must evaluate the course learning outcomes, using the statistics of students' scores in assignments and tests; the results are recapitulated against the programme learning outcomes and used to improve the course plans and teaching materials (Universitas Negeri Surabaya, 2025).

UNESA structurally embeds sustainability literacy across all academic departments through its Outcome-Based Education (OBE) framework. Core sustainability competencies are explicitly integrated into Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) across undergraduate and postgraduate programs, ensuring that students engage with sustainable development principles tailored to their specific fields of study. To operationalize this instructional design, the university utilizes its dedicated digital learning platform, SINDIG (sindig.unesa.ac.id), which is configured to deliver and monitor the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) curriculum.

To ensure academic rigor and accountability, UNESA centrally monitors the implementation of sustainability learning outcomes through DPTP, with formal verification conducted by the UNESA SDGs Center. Lecturers upload their SDG course plans to the SIM SDGs DATA system on the official SDGs Center portal (sdgsdata.unesa.ac.id), where each plan is tagged with the SDGs it supports and goes through peer validation. The platform gives UNESA the data to track how the SDGs are taught across faculties, check curriculum alignment and report its institutional impact.

Study programmes update their SDG course plans, 2026

On 26 May 2026 the Master's programme in Primary Education (S2 Pendidikan Dasar) restated, at its Mimbar Ilmiah forum, its commitment to integrate SDG values into its OBE curriculum through project-based learning, research on local education issues and community service (S2 Pendidikan Dasar, 2026). On 28 June 2026 the Faculty of Psychology held a workshop with the Director of Education Transformation on updating its course plans with the OBE approach, designed backwards from the graduate profile and learning outcomes so that every student has measurable competences (Fakultas Psikologi, 2026).

From 6 to 8 August 2026 all lecturers of the Social Studies Education programme (S1 Pendidikan IPS) drafted the 2026 version of their course plans, oriented to graduate learning outcomes, and evaluated the programme's curriculum (S1 Pendidikan IPS, 2026). On 19 and 20 August 2026 the Fine Arts programme (S1 Seni Rupa Murni) held a focus group with stakeholders, alumni and students to update its OBE curriculum with an SDG perspective (S1 Seni Rupa Murni, 2026).

Learning resources for the SDGs

UNESA systematically institutionalizes SDG integration by providing universal access to its centralized E-Library portal (library.unesa.ac.id), which gives access to international research databases including SpringerLink, SAGE Publications, Taylor & Francis, ScienceDirect and Scopus (Perpustakaan UNESA, n.d.). This infrastructure empowers students and faculty to use current international literature on climate action, educational equity, and sustainable innovation. Every course plan lists its main and supporting references (Universitas Negeri Surabaya, 2025), so these global resources feed directly into coursework and student research projects, where students evaluate and apply SDG principles in their own disciplines.
