UNESA collaborates internationally on SDG data

Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) takes part in international efforts to gather and measure data on the SDGs: in 2026 it compiled its campus sustainability data for the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings (Direktorat Inovasi, Pemeringkatan, dan Publikasi Ilmiah, 2026b) and organised its data for the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, and in 2025 it hosted the International Conference of SDGs and Bibliometric Studies with speakers from Turkey, Japan and Singapore on measuring research for the 2030 Agenda (Universitas Negeri Surabaya, 2025).

International collaboration on gathering or measuring SDG data

Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) takes part in international efforts to gather and measure SDG data, contributing its data to the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, which measures universities worldwide on the same sustainability indicators. In March 2026 the Directorate of Innovation, Ranking and Scientific Publication (IPPI) coordinated all units to complete the 2026 data by the submission deadline of 13 March 2026, covering setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water and transportation, which it mapped to SDG 6, SDG 11, SDG 12 and SDG 13. Supporting documents were gathered in one central repository with the university's information team (Direktorat Inovasi, Pemeringkatan, dan Publikasi Ilmiah, 2026b).

UNESA also measures its progress on all 17 SDGs through the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. On 5 May 2026 the directorate held a workshop on SDG strategy in university governance and a focus group, Optimalisasi Data Universitas untuk Meningkatkan Peringkat THE Impact Ranking (optimising university data for the THE Impact Rankings), on integrating university data into SDG reporting. The Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation, Ranking, Publication and Science Center, Bambang Sigit Widodo, called for teaching, research and community service data to be brought into one integrated dashboard (Direktorat Inovasi, Pemeringkatan, dan Publikasi Ilmiah, 2026a).

On 12 July 2025 the directorate hosted the 3rd International Conference of SDGs and Bibliometric Studies (ICOSBI), Bridging Policy, Research, and Community Engagement in Achieving 2030 Agenda, on measuring and mapping research for the SDGs. Speakers included Osman Gültekin of Istanbul Aydin University, Turkey, UNESCO Chair for cultural, governance and education diplomacy, Hiroki Saito of the University of Tokyo, Japan, and Hairon Salleh of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; selected papers are published in the Scopus-indexed E3S Web of Conferences (Universitas Negeri Surabaya, 2025).

UNESA also participated in the 13th Indonesia-France Joint Working Group (JWG) on Higher Education, Research, and Innovation on 2-5 July 2024, which strengthened bilateral cooperation in higher education, research, and innovation. Discussions included the green economy and blue economy, areas closely connected to sustainable development and the achievement of the SDGs. The JWG provided a platform for international knowledge exchange and the development of collaborative research priorities between Indonesia and France. This initiative complements UNESA’s broader international engagement in sustainability-related research and supports the university’s commitment to the 2030 Agenda (Universitas Negeri Surabaya, 2024).

UNESA's role and contribution

Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) leads its SDG data work through the Directorate of Innovation, Ranking and Scientific Publication. The university runs an SDG information system, Sistem Informasi Sustainable Development Goals (SIMSDG), and a partnership information system, SIMPARE, which records international peers; in August 2026 the Bachelor of Culinary Education described how it uses both systems to document its contribution to the SDGs and its international peers (S1 Pendidikan Tata Boga, 2026).
