UNESA hosts neutral forums for stakeholders to discuss public challenges

Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) provides a neutral platform for different stakeholders to discuss public challenges, hosting the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia for a discussion open to student and staff questions on 29 August 2025, hosting the Ministry of Human Rights' public test of the draft amendment to Indonesia's Human Rights Law on 18 June 2026, open to civil society, academics and students, and co-hosting a focus group with the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) on 21 May 2026 that brought together provincial government offices, the regional police and civil-society organisations on child-protection policy.

Neutral platform for different political stakeholders

Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) provides a neutral platform for different stakeholders to discuss public challenges. On Friday 29 August 2025, UNESA hosted the Constitutional Court (Mahkamah Konstitusi) of the Republic of Indonesia at the Rectorate Building, Campus 2, Lidah Wetan, for a Constitutional Discussion and the signing of a cooperation agreement with the Faculty of Law (Universitas Negeri Surabaya, 2025). Constitutional Court Chairman Suhartoyo and Secretary-General Heru Setiawan explained citizens' constitutional rights and the Court's role, and took questions from the students and lecturers who attended, without restricting what could be asked (Universitas Negeri Surabaya, 2025). Rector Prof. Dr. Nurhasan called the event a message that the campus must be a laboratory of democracy, not only a ceremony (Universitas Negeri Surabaya, 2025).

UNESA also opened its campus to the Ministry of Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia for a public test (uji publik) of the draft amendment to Law Number 39 of 1999 on Human Rights, held on Thursday 18 June 2026 in the Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences auditorium, Campus 2 Lidah Wetan (S2 Manajemen Inovasi, Sekolah Pascasarjana, 2026). The session, reported by the Graduate School's Master of Innovation Management programme, was attended by participants from civil society, academia and student representatives, and was designed specifically to gather aspirations, criticism and substantive input from the public before the draft law is enacted (S2 Manajemen Inovasi, Sekolah Pascasarjana, 2026).

The Master of Sociology programme, with the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), convened a cross-sector dialogue on 21 May 2026 in the FISIPOL dean's building, on filicide and violence against children in the family. The session is described in the source as an important dialogue space bringing together stakeholders across sectors: representatives of the East Java Social Affairs Office, the provincial Women's Empowerment, Child Protection and Population Office, the provincial victim-protection unit, East Java Regional Police, the women's organisations Nasyiatul Aisyiyah and Fatayat East Java, and KPAI's own team, alongside UNESA staff (S2 Sosiologi, 2026).

In each case UNESA acted as host or co-organiser rather than presenting only one side, opening the floor to questions or to comment from a named audience of civil-society, academic and student participants (Universitas Negeri Surabaya, 2025) (S2 Manajemen Inovasi, Sekolah Pascasarjana, 2026).
